These figures exclude Special Needs Plans. The out-of-pocket maximum is the most you pay in a year for covered in-network Part A and Part B services; it does not include your plan premium, your Part B premium or Part D drug costs, which have their own $2,400 cap for 2027.

How the out-of-pocket maximum works

Every Medicare Advantage plan must cap what you pay for covered in-network medical care each year. Once your copays and coinsurance reach the cap, the plan pays 100% of covered in-network services for the rest of the calendar year. PPO plans also have a separate, higher combined cap that includes out-of-network care.

What changed for 2027

The caps went up. Of the 32 Adams County plans offered in both 2026 and 2027, 21 raised their in-network maximum and 1 lowered it. The lowest cap in the county moved from $2,900 to $3,300, and the highest from $9,250 to $9,850.

Plan type matters. HMO-POS plans average $5,192 for 2027 and PPO plans $7,057. A lower cap often comes with a tighter network, so check that your doctors are in it.

Where the 2027 caps cluster

Sorting the 36 plans by in-network cap: 4 sit under $4,000, 13 fall between $4,000 and $5,999, 15 between $6,000 and $7,999, and 4 at $8,000 or more. The median is $6,200, so on half the county plans a costly year can reach at least that figure.

Southern Weld County, around Fort Lupton, Hudson and Keenesburg, looks similar but narrower: 25 plans for 2027 with caps from $4,300 to $9,850, according to the same CMS file.

Worked example: a hospital year

Picture a member on a plan at the $6,200 median who has a hospital stay, rehab and follow-up visits in 2027. Copays stop once they total $6,200; plan premiums, the Part B premium and drug costs are extra. The same year on Original Medicare with Medigap Plan G would leave the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026) plus the Plan G premium, which varies by insurer and age. That difference is the real comparison, not the premium alone.

What to do next

Ask yourself whether you could pay the full cap in a bad year, such as a hospital stay plus follow-up care. If not, compare plans with a lower cap, look at a Medicare Supplement, or price a hospital indemnity policy. We run those comparisons at our Brighton office or by phone during Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, 2026.
