The community

Thornton at a glance

The Census Bureau counts about 144,000 Thornton residents, roughly 15,600 of them 65 or older. Median household income is about $103,100, and 9.9% of residents have no health insurance. The Census lists a sliver of Thornton in Weld County, but the State Demography Office places all of its residents in Adams County.

Thornton residents choose from the Adams County plan list for 2027. HCA HealthOne Mountain Ridge at 9191 Grant Street is the Thornton hospital in the CMS file, rated 3 out of 5. People who see specialists in Denver, Aurora or Boulder often weigh a PPO, which lets you go outside the network at a higher cost, against an HMO with a tighter network.

How Lisa helps here. Thornton is next door to Brighton, and Lisa meets Thornton clients at the Brighton office, by phone or by video. She lays the plans side by side with your doctors and prescriptions so the choice is yours, not a sales pitch.

Does Thornton offer free Medicare classes for people turning 65?

Yes. The Thornton Active Adult Center at 11181 Colorado Boulevard lists two free Medicare services on its Assistance and Resources page. Medicare 101 classes, taught by Benefits in Action counselors, cover enrollment, benefits and costs and are aimed at people new to Medicare or about to join. Separate one-on-one Medicare counseling is given by trained Benefits in Action volunteers. Both need an appointment, booked at 303-255-7850.

The center is run by Thornton Parks, Recreation and Community Programs and is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It also serves a home-cooked lunch Monday through Friday for adults 55 and over, residents or not, and the city runs a second set of programs in the Trail Winds Active Adult Wing. The resource list includes help with tax preparation and transportation services such as Access-a-Ride, Call-n-Ride and Via Mobility Services.

A class explains how Medicare works. What it cannot do is lay the 2027 plans side by side with your own doctors, drugs and budget. That is where Lisa Asmussen comes in: she is a licensed broker, she meets Thornton clients at the Brighton office or by phone or video, and the review costs you nothing.

Thornton was built for returning GIs. What should veterans know about Medicare?

The city tells its own story this way: in 1952 developer Sam Hoffman bought 400 acres of the Eppinger family farm north of Denver to build an affordable, self-sustaining community, branded "The City of Planned Progress" and named for Governor Dan Thornton. The first three homes were finished in 1953, and GIs home from the Korean War were the first to move in. After a failed vote earlier in 1956, residents voted to incorporate later that year.

Veterans still face a choice at 65 that other retirees do not. VA health care and Medicare are separate programs: the VA generally pays for care at VA facilities, and Medicare pays for care from Medicare providers outside the VA. The nearest VA hospital in the CMS file is VA Eastern Colorado Healthcare System at 1700 North Wheeling Street in Aurora. VA drug coverage counts as creditable coverage, so a veteran who relies on it can skip Part D without a late penalty, which is why some veterans pair VA benefits with a Medicare Advantage plan that has no drug coverage.

  • Keep your VA enrollment letter with your Medicare papers.
  • Decide whether you will use VA doctors, community doctors or both.
  • Ask Lisa to check whether a plan without drug coverage fits your situation.

Which rail stations and clinics in Thornton matter when I compare networks?

RTD's N Line has three Thornton stops: Original Thornton•88th, Thornton Crossroads•104th and Eastlake•124th, the current end of the line. Trains reach Union Station every 20 minutes at peak times and every 30 minutes off peak, so downtown Denver hospitals are within reach without a car. The Northglenn•112th station sits between the Thornton stops.

Closer to home, HCA HealthOne Mountain Ridge on Grant Street is the Thornton hospital in the CMS file, and the Adams County resource guide lists a Clinica Family Health Services clinic at 8990 North Washington Street in Thornton. Farther south, the University of Colorado Hospital at 12605 East 16th Avenue in Aurora is also listed in Adams County in the CMS file.

Every one of those is a separate network question. An HMO that includes Mountain Ridge may not include specialists in Aurora, and a PPO that covers both may cost more each month. Lisa lists the hospitals and clinics you use, then checks each one against each plan before you decide.

Health profile

What is common in Thornton

Plan choice follows the conditions you actually live with, because they decide which specialists and drugs you need covered.

Compared with the Colorado county average, Thornton reads higher on diagnosed diabetes, obesity and adults under 65 without insurance.

Crude rates follow the age mix of a place: an older community reads higher on most conditions. Colorado figure: average of the 64 Colorado counties, weighted by adult population.

Why this matters for plan choice

Thornton runs above the Colorado county average on diagnosed diabetes. The chronic-condition Special Needs Plans on the Adams County list are built around: Cardiovascular Disorders; Chronic Heart Failure; Diabetes Mellitus. If you live with one of those, a C-SNP may be worth a look; you need a qualifying diagnosis to join.

What changes for 2027

Adams County plans: 2026 to 2027

Your plan mailed an Annual Notice of Change by September 30, 2026. It lists what changes on January 1, 2027: premium, deductible, out-of-pocket limit, copays, drug list and network. Compare it line by line, or bring it to Lisa.

Counting plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included, the Adams County list goes from 64 plans in 2026 to 59 in 2027, and the average in-network out-of-pocket limit moves from $6,497 to $7,199.

These counts cover plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included, so they differ from the headline count of 36, which leaves out Special Needs Plans and includes plans without drug coverage. Clear Spring Health has no Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage in Adams County for 2027.

8 plans on the 2026 Adams County list end with no similar plan in the county, including Select Health Medicare + Kroger (HMO), Select Health Medicare Flex (HMO), Select Health Medicare Active (HMO). 4 more plans end while the same company offers a plan with the same or a similar name under a new plan ID (HealthSpring TotalCare (HMO D-SNP), HealthSpring TotalCare Plus (HMO D-SNP), HealthSpring Preferred (HMO) and Aetna Medicare Signature (HMO-POS)). Members are not moved into the new plan automatically; to keep it, enroll in the new plan ID by December 7, 2026. The full list is on the Adams County guide.

If your plan is not renewing: you receive a non-renewal letter in October. You can pick a new plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7, 2026), and a Special Enrollment Period runs through the end of February 2027. Confirm your dates on Medicare.gov. The official Medicare & You handbook explains each option.

FAQ

Thornton Medicare questions

How many Medicare Advantage plans are available in Thornton for 2027?

Thornton uses the Adams County plan list. It has 36 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027 (Special Needs Plans not included) from 10 organizations. Of those, 33 have a $0 Part C premium, and 30 have a $0 combined monthly premium for Parts C and D (25 of those include drug coverage; 5 have no drug coverage, so no Part D premium). You still pay the Part B premium, which is $202.90 a month in 2026; the 2027 amount is announced around November 2026. Source: CMS 2027 Landscape file.

Should someone in Thornton choose a PPO or an HMO?

It depends on how you use care. An HMO usually keeps you in network and often costs less; a PPO lets you see out-of-network providers at a higher cost. The PPO table on this page lists every Adams County PPO for 2027 with its premium and out-of-pocket limit, so you can weigh that flexibility against the cost.

Which hospital is in Thornton?

HCA HealthOne Mountain Ridge, 9191 Grant Street, is the Thornton acute care hospital in the CMS Hospital General Information file, with a 3 out of 5 overall rating. Whether it is in a given plan network is a separate check Lisa makes before you enroll.

What changes for Medicare plans in Thornton in 2027?

Counting Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included, Adams County goes from 64 plans in 2026 to 59 in 2027. The CMS crosswalk shows 8 plans ending with no similar plan in the county, 4 plans ending while the same company offers a plan with the same or a similar name under a new plan ID (members must enroll in it themselves), 3 plans folding into another plan automatically, and 10 new plans. Clear Spring Health has no Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage in Adams County for 2027. Your plan’s Annual Notice of Change lists what changes for you on January 1.

Provenance

Sources and methodology

How the figures are derived

  • Headline plan counts and averages exclude Special Needs Plans, which have their own eligibility rules and are reported separately.
  • "$0 Part C premium" counts plans whose Part C premium is $0. "$0 combined monthly premium for Parts C and D" counts plans whose consolidated Part C + D premium is $0 (for a plan without drug coverage, its Part C premium); our guides and blog use this second count. Out-of-pocket limits are in-network amounts. The average Part D deductible covers plans with drug coverage only.
  • The 2026 to 2027 comparison counts Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included, and its "$0" row uses the combined Part C + D premium, so it differs from the headline count.
  • When the CMS crosswalk ends a plan with no successor but the same company files a plan with the same or a similar name under a new plan ID, we say so; members are not moved into the new ID automatically.
  • We do not publish per-plan enrollment: the source does not carry it, and we never estimate plan figures.
