The county

Who lives in Broomfield County

The Census Bureau counts about 76,300 Broomfield residents, 15.6% of them 65 or older, with a median household income of about $123,900. Only 4.4% have no health insurance.

Broomfield’s list is close to its neighbors’ but not identical, so a Broomfield address should always be compared against this list, not the Adams, Boulder or Jefferson lists. The tables below group the plans by type.

Why is Broomfield its own county, and what does that mean for my Medicare plan?

Broomfield used to sit in parts of four counties: Adams, Boulder, Jefferson and Weld. Voters approved a state constitutional amendment on November 3, 1998, and after a three-year transition the City and County of Broomfield took effect on November 15, 2001, as Colorado's 64th county. Its territory was pulled out of the four counties and joined into one combined city and county government.

For Medicare, that history has a practical side. Because Broomfield is its own county, a Medicare Advantage plan has to be approved for Broomfield County specifically. If you move into Broomfield from Adams, Boulder, Jefferson or Weld County and your current plan does not serve Broomfield, Medicare gives you a Special Enrollment Period. It starts when you move, or the month before if you tell your plan ahead of time, and runs for 2 full months after the move. If you do nothing, you will be returned to Original Medicare when the old plan drops you.

Where do Broomfield residents apply for Health First Colorado or the Medicare Savings Program?

Broomfield's Benefits and Self-Sufficiency team handles county benefits for older adults: Old Age Pension and the Home Care Allowance, Medicaid (Health First Colorado), the Medicare Savings Program, Home and Community-Based Services, Long-Term Care, SNAP food help, LEAP winter heating help and burial assistance. Call 720-887-2290 or email yourbenefits@broomfield.org. The county's resource guide also lists Benefits in Action (720-221-8354), which guides residents through Medicaid, Medicare and SNAP applications one on one.

The Medicare Savings Program deserves a close look if money is tight. Depending on the level you qualify for, it pays your Part B premium and, at the QMB level, also Part A premiums if you owe them plus Medicare deductibles, coinsurance and copays. Medicare.gov adds that anyone who qualifies for QMB, SLMB or QI also gets Extra Help with prescription drug costs, which changes which Part D option makes sense. Apply before you settle on a drug plan for 2027, since the answer can shift what the same prescriptions cost you each month.

Can I use Medicare at the Broomfield Public Health immunization clinic?

No. Broomfield Public Health and Environment's immunization clinic states that it does not take Medicare or private insurance. It accepts Medicaid, offers low or no cost vaccines to people with Medicaid and to uninsured or underinsured patients, and expects payment at the time of service. Questions go to the Public Health Office at 720-887-2220.

With Medicare, it usually makes more sense to get shots where Medicare is billed. Part B covers the seasonal flu shot, and you pay nothing when the provider accepts assignment. The shingles vaccine falls under Part D, and Medicare.gov says you pay nothing for it if you have Part D. That is one more reason to have drug coverage, either a Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan that includes it.

What help does the county offer Broomfield veterans?

Broomfield's Veteran Services Office (720-887-2263) helps veterans and families file for VA benefits, appeal denied claims and request military service records. The Denver Regional Council of Governments, Broomfield's Area Agency on Aging, also runs Veteran Directed Care (720-278-2351), which gives eligible veterans a flexible budget for in-home and community services.

A settled VA claim can change your Medicare math, for example how much you lean on VA care versus a plan's network. Get the VA picture clear first, then compare plans with Lisa by phone or video. The county guide also lists Cultivate's VetsGo program, which gives free rides to medical appointments, including at VA facilities, for veterans and their spouses (303-443-1933).

Broomfield is a consolidated city and county, so these county figures also describe the City of Broomfield.

The other path

Medigap in Broomfield County

Every Advantage plan on this page replaces Original Medicare with a plan network. The other path keeps Original Medicare and adds a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy plus a separate Part D plan.

Medigap has no network: any provider that accepts Medicare accepts it, anywhere in the country. Premiums are higher than most Advantage plans, and in exchange your costs are more predictable. The Colorado Division of Insurance publishes Medigap premium charts for every company selling in the state, so you can compare the same plan letter across insurers.

Timing matters. Your 6-month Medigap open enrollment window starts when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. Inside it, an insurer cannot turn you down or charge more for your health. Outside it, in most cases it can. See Medigap rules in Colorado and Medicare Advantage vs Medigap.

Plain English

Medicare plan terms on this page

Medicare Advantage (Part C)
A Medicare approved plan from a private company that provides your Part A and Part B benefits in place of Original Medicare. Most include drug coverage and some extras. You keep paying your Part B premium.
$0 Part C premium
The plan charges no monthly premium of its own for medical coverage. You still pay your Part B premium, any drug premium the plan lists, and copays or coinsurance when you use care.
In-network out-of-pocket maximum (MOOP)
The most you pay in a calendar year for covered Part A and Part B services from in-network providers. Once you reach it, the plan pays for covered in-network care for the rest of the year. Premiums and Part D drug costs do not count toward it.
HMO
Health Maintenance Organization. You generally use doctors and hospitals in the plan network, except for emergencies and urgent care, and many HMOs ask for a referral before you see a specialist.
PPO
Preferred Provider Organization. You can use doctors in or out of the network, but out-of-network care usually costs more. Referrals are usually not required.
HMO-POS
An HMO with a point of service option. You mostly use the network, but the plan lets you get some services out of network, usually at a higher cost.
Special Needs Plan (SNP)
A Medicare Advantage plan open only to people with particular needs: both Medicare and Medicaid (Health First Colorado in Colorado), certain chronic conditions, or living in an institution such as a nursing home.
Star rating
A yearly CMS quality score from 1 to 5 stars, based on measures such as preventive care, member experience and customer service. It describes the plan overall; it does not tell you whether your doctors or drugs are covered.
FAQ

Broomfield County Medicare questions

Broomfield County has 32 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027 (Special Needs Plans not included) from 9 organizations. Of those, 29 have a $0 Part C premium, and 26 have a $0 combined monthly premium for Parts C and D (21 of those include drug coverage; 5 have no drug coverage, so no Part D premium). Why does Broomfield have its own Medicare plan list?

Because Broomfield is its own county. CMS approves Medicare Advantage plans county by county, and the City and County of Broomfield is a separate county from Adams, Boulder, Jefferson and Weld.

Which hospitals serve Broomfield County?

Two hospitals: CommonSpirit St. Anthony North Hospital (14300 Orchard Parkway, Westminster), which the CMS file records under Broomfield County and rates 5 out of 5, and UCHealth Broomfield Hospital (11820 Destination Drive), which has no published CMS rating yet. CMS files UCHealth Broomfield under Jefferson County, but the address is in Broomfield, so this page lists it here. Check each against a plan network.

What changes for Medicare plans in Broomfield County in 2027?

Counting Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included, Broomfield County goes from 60 plans in 2026 to 53 in 2027. (The headline count of 32 plans on this page leaves out Special Needs Plans and includes plans without drug coverage, which is why the numbers differ.) The CMS crosswalk shows 9 plans ending with no similar plan in the county, 4 plans ending while the same company offers a plan with the same or a similar name under a new plan ID (members must enroll in it themselves), 3 plans folding into another plan automatically, and 9 new plans. Clear Spring Health has no Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage in Broomfield County for 2027. Your plan’s Annual Notice of Change lists what changes for you on January 1.

What does local data say about health coverage in Broomfield County?

Census figures (ACS 2020 to 2024 5-year estimates) show 4.4% of Broomfield County residents with no health insurance, against 7.7% for Colorado. People under 65 can shop for coverage on Connect for Health Colorado, the state’s own marketplace; open enrollment for 2027 coverage starts November 1, 2026.

Provenance

Sources and methodology

How the figures are derived

  • Headline plan counts and averages exclude Special Needs Plans, which have their own eligibility rules and are reported separately.
  • "$0 Part C premium" counts plans whose Part C premium is $0. "$0 combined monthly premium for Parts C and D" counts plans whose consolidated Part C + D premium is $0 (for a plan without drug coverage, its Part C premium); our guides and blog use this second count. Out-of-pocket limits are in-network amounts. The average Part D deductible covers plans with drug coverage only.
  • The 2026 to 2027 comparison counts Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included, and its "$0" row uses the combined Part C + D premium, so it differs from the headline count.
  • When the CMS crosswalk ends a plan with no successor but the same company files a plan with the same or a similar name under a new plan ID, we say so; members are not moved into the new ID automatically.
  • We do not publish per-plan enrollment: the source does not carry it, and we never estimate plan figures.
