Colorado Special Enrollment Period Checker
Missing Open Enrollment does not always mean waiting a year. Answer two questions about what changed and when, and this tells you whether you likely qualify for a Special Enrollment Period on Connect for Health Colorado, and how long you have left.
Estimates only. Estimates only. Figures on this page use published plan-year values and the details you enter. They are not a quote, an offer of coverage, or a determination of eligibility. Your final premium and any tax credit are confirmed at enrollment with the carrier or Connect for Health Colorado. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else.
How the Special Enrollment check works
The checker matches the event you pick against the qualifying life changes Connect for Health Colorado lists, then counts days from the date you enter.
Timing rules differ by event. A loss of coverage looks both backward and forward; a marriage, birth or move looks only forward from the date it happened. The checker treats each event the way Connect for Health Colorado describes it.
- Sort the event. Losing coverage, marriage, a birth or adoption, a move with prior coverage, and gaining citizenship or lawful presence are treated as qualifying. A voluntary drop or a lapse for non-payment is not.
- Apply the move test. For a move it asks whether you had qualifying coverage in the 60 days before; moving while uninsured usually opens nothing.
- Count the days between the event and today, against the 60-day window Connect for Health Colorado gives.
- Look ahead for losses. If coverage ends in the future, it says apply now, since a loss usually lets you apply in the 60 days before it.
- Name the paperwork an insurer most often asks for to prove the event.
Days used = today minus event dateDays left = 60 minus days usedLikely qualifies = qualifying event + inside the window (+ prior coverage, for a move) Worked example: a Brighton job loss on September 30, 2026
Hypothetical worker, not a client. A Brighton warehouse employee’s employer plan ended on September 30, 2026, when the job ended. Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life change.
Day 60 falls on November 29, 2026. Checking on October 14, 2026, the tool shows 46 days left.
Open Enrollment for 2027 opens November 1, 2026, but it only sells coverage that starts in 2027. October through December 2026 can only be covered through the Special Enrollment Period, so waiting would leave a gap.
Had the end date been known in August, applying before September 30 could have avoided any gap, because a loss of coverage usually allows applying up to 60 days ahead.
A second case: a hypothetical Commerce City family welcomes a baby on October 2, 2026. The birth qualifies, and the window runs to December 1, 2026.
A third case: a hypothetical family moves from Wyoming to Brighton on October 1, 2026 with a Wyoming marketplace plan in force. Moving to Colorado with prior coverage qualifies, so they have until November 30, 2026 to choose a Colorado plan.
| Event | Event date | Day 60 |
|---|---|---|
| Job-based coverage ends | September 30, 2026 | November 29, 2026 |
| Birth of a child | October 2, 2026 | December 1, 2026 |
Ways people lose a Special Enrollment Period
- Waiting out the COBRA decision. COBRA’s 60-day election clock and the marketplace window start together (CMS). Choosing COBRA and later dropping it voluntarily does not usually reopen enrollment.
- Moving without prior coverage. A new ZIP code alone rarely qualifies unless you had coverage in the 60 days before the move.
- Assuming enrollment happens on its own. Nothing starts until you apply and choose a plan.
- Losing the proof. Your insurer may ask for proof after you enroll (Connect for Health Colorado). Keep the termination letter, certificate or lease.
- Forgetting Medicaid is year-round. If income drops, Health First Colorado and CHP+ accept applications in any month.
- Mixing up a Medicare clock with a marketplace clock. Turning 65 starts your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period. Plan the move from a marketplace plan to Medicare on that timeline rather than waiting for a marketplace window.
Colorado-only routes into coverage
Connect for Health Colorado decides Special Enrollment eligibility for Coloradans; HealthCare.gov does not handle Colorado plans.
Tax Time Enrollment: checking a box when you file your Colorado state return by April 15 can connect you with free or low-cost coverage and qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period (Connect for Health Colorado).
Members of federally recognized tribes can enroll any time of year.
The state list also counts losing Health First Colorado or Medicare Part A eligibility, turning 26 and ending a student plan. Adults 19 to 64 with income up to 133% of the poverty level may qualify for Health First Colorado itself (HCPF).
