2026 Medicare IRMAA Calculator for Colorado
Higher-income households pay more for Part B and Part D through IRMAA, the income-related monthly adjustment amount. It is based on your tax return from two years ago. Enter that income and your filing status to see your 2026 bracket and premium.
Estimates only. Estimates only. Figures on this page use published plan-year values and the details you enter. They are not a quote, an offer of coverage, or a determination of eligibility. Your final premium and any tax credit are confirmed at enrollment with the carrier or Connect for Health Colorado. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else.
How IRMAA brackets are applied to your income
IRMAA works in brackets, not percentages. Social Security takes your modified adjusted gross income from the return two years back, places you in a bracket, and charges the amounts CMS publishes in its 2026 Parts A and B fact sheet.
Social Security mails a notice when IRMAA applies, usually late in the year before it takes effect. If the income figure itself is wrong, for example because you amended that return, ask Social Security to correct it with a copy of the amended return.
- Find your MAGI: adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest, from your 2024 return for 2026 premiums.
- Choose the table for your filing status. Single and joint returns each have thresholds; married filing separately has a stricter table this tool omits.
- Compare with the thresholds. In 2026 surcharges start above $109,000 single or $218,000 joint, and the top bracket begins at $500,000 or $750,000.
- Read two numbers: your total Part B premium and the Part D amount added to your drug plan premium.
- Apply per person. On a joint return, each spouse enrolled in Medicare pays the bracket amount.

| up to $109,000 | up to $218,000 | $202.90 | $0 |
| $109,000 | $218,000 | $284.10 | $14.50 |
| $137,000 | $274,000 | $405.80 | $37.50 |
| $171,000 | $342,000 | $527.50 | $60.40 |
| $205,000 | $410,000 | $649.20 | $83.30 |
| $500,000 or more | $750,000 or more | $689.90 | $91 |
Worked example: a one-time gain in Brighton and a single filer in Westminster
Hypothetical households, not clients. A married Brighton couple filed jointly for 2024 with MAGI of $230,000, swollen by a one-time gain from selling a rental property. That is above $218,000, so in 2026 each pays $284.10 a month for Part B instead of $202.90, plus $14.50 on top of their drug premiums.
Each person’s extra is $81.20 + $14.50 = $95.70 a month. For the couple that is $2,296.80 for the year, triggered by income that will not repeat.
A single filer in Westminster had 2024 MAGI of $140,000. That lands in the second bracket: $405.80 for Part B and $37.50 added to Part D, $240.40 a month more than the standard premium alone, or $2,884.80 a year.
Notice the cliffs. A joint MAGI of exactly $218,000 pays no IRMAA; one dollar more pays the full first-bracket amount for both spouses.
IRMAA mistakes that cost Front Range retirees
- Forgetting one-time income counts. Capital gains, Roth conversions and large IRA withdrawals raise MAGI that year and surface in premiums two years later.
- Overlooking home sale rules. The IRS home sale exclusion lets many owners exclude up to $250,000 of gain, or $500,000 on a joint return. Gain above that counts toward MAGI.
- Not filing form SSA-44 after retiring. If income fell after a life-changing event such as stopping work, reduced hours, marriage, divorce or a spouse’s death, ask Social Security to use newer income on form SSA-44.
- Assuming IRMAA only touches Part B. The Part D add-on applies even when your drug coverage comes through Medicare Advantage.
- Expecting brackets to stay put. CMS publishes new amounts each year; 2027 figures arrive around November 2026.
IRMAA, Colorado income and the other end of the scale
IRMAA is federal. Colorado’s state income tax does not change it, because Social Security works from the federal figures on your return.
Moves that lower MAGI, such as spreading a Roth conversion over several years or timing a property sale, are tax decisions. Run them past a Colorado tax professional first; I am not a tax adviser.
At the other end of the scale, Coloradans with limited income can have the Part B premium paid entirely through a Medicare Savings Program, run with Health First Colorado and applied for at the county Department of Human Services (HCPF). Medicare.gov lists 2026 QI income limits of $1,816 a month for one person and $2,455 for a couple.
If income has fallen sharply since the return Social Security used, both doors can matter: SSA-44 to lower IRMAA now, and a savings program check if income keeps dropping.
Key terms: IRMAA calculator
- MAGI for IRMAA
- Adjusted gross income plus tax-exempt interest, as reported to the IRS.
- Lookback year
- The tax year Social Security uses, normally two years before the premium year.
- Life-changing event
- One of the events listed on form SSA-44, such as work stoppage, that lets a newer year be used.
- Part D IRMAA
- A separate monthly amount for higher incomes, usually withheld from Social Security checks rather than paid to the plan.
- Bracket cliff
- The point where one more dollar of MAGI moves you into the whole next premium tier.
Documents for an IRMAA review or SSA-44 request
- Federal returns for the last three years.
- The IRMAA letter from Social Security.
- Proof of the event: a retirement letter, death certificate, divorce decree or employer statement.
- An estimate of this year’s income, plus details of any planned sale, conversion or large withdrawal.
What this assumes
- Uses the 2026 Part B premiums and IRMAA brackets published by CMS, based on your 2024 modified adjusted gross income.
- Premium amounts are the exact figures CMS publishes for each bracket.
- Married filing separately has its own, stricter brackets. This calculator covers single and joint filers.
- The Part D surcharge is added on top of whatever your Part D or Medicare Advantage drug plan charges.
- Income dropped because you retired or another life change happened? You can ask Social Security to use the newer figure (form SSA-44).
- CMS announces the 2027 amounts around November 2026.
- An estimate from published figures and the numbers you enter, not a quote or an eligibility decision.

What the IRMAA calculator cannot do
- Married filing separately, which has its own thresholds.
- 2027 amounts, due around November 2026.
- Decide an SSA-44 request; Social Security reviews your evidence.
- Give tax advice on lowering MAGI.

Common questions
What income triggers IRMAA in 2026?
Modified adjusted gross income above $109,000 for a single filer or $218,000 for a joint return, taken from your 2024 tax return.
Why does 2026 IRMAA use my 2024 income?
Social Security uses the most recent tax return the IRS has, which is usually from two years earlier.
Can I appeal IRMAA if my income went down?
Yes, after certain life-changing events such as retirement, a reduction in work hours, or the death of a spouse. You file form SSA-44 with Social Security and ask them to use the newer income.
Does IRMAA apply to Part D and Medicare Advantage drug coverage too?
Yes. An extra Part D amount is added at the same income levels, on top of what your drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan charges.
