A Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, policy works alongside Original Medicare. Medicare pays its share of an approved bill and your Medigap plan pays its share, so the bills you see are smaller and far more predictable. When you buy one matters as much as which plan you pick.
We do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent 10 organizations which offer 106 products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all of your options. Headwaters Health and Wealth is not connected with or endorsed by the United States government or the federal Medicare program. Medicare has neither endorsed nor reviewed this information.
Medigap plans are standardized and named by letter. In Colorado, as in most states, the plans are A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M and N, plus high deductible versions of F and G (Colorado DOI Medigap guide, 2025). A Plan G from one company has the same medical benefits as a Plan G from another; what differs is the premium, how the company has raised rates over time, and its service. You are not comparing networks, because Original Medicare plus Medigap lets you see any doctor or hospital in the country that accepts Medicare, without referrals.
Price is the real comparison, and it varies a lot. The Colorado Division of Insurance guide shows the point with its own example: the same Plan G can cost $150 a month from one company and $250 from another, sometimes with no difference in benefits. Premiums also depend on your age, where you live and whether you use tobacco.
Real Colorado numbers make the point. The Division of Insurance 2026 to 2027 premium chart, which prices a 65 year old non-smoker in Denver ZIP code 80202, lists 29 companies selling Plan G, with monthly premiums from $128 to $351 for women and $147 to $393 for men. Plan N runs from $93 to $281 for women and $107 to $315 for men, and high deductible Plan G from $46 to $77 and $51 to $85. Same benefits within each letter, very different prices. Brighton premiums can differ from the Denver ZIP code the chart uses, so I quote your own ZIP code, age and tobacco status.
The chart also marks how each company prices as you age: attained age (the premium rises with your age), issue age (priced on your age when you buy) or community rated (everyone pays the same regardless of age). Most companies on the Colorado chart use attained age. That label tells you more about your premium at 75 than the price at 65 does, so I put it next to every quote.
Medigap does not replace your Part B premium. You pay $202.90 a month to Medicare in 2026 (most people), plus the Medigap premium. Plan G leaves you the Part B deductible ($283 in 2026) and pays the rest of your share of Medicare approved costs, including the Part A hospital deductible of $1,736 per benefit period. Plans C and F, which also paid the Part B deductible, can only be bought by people who were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020. Medigap plans do not include drug coverage, so most people pair one with a Part D plan.
High deductible Plan G trades a lower premium for a deductible: you pay the first $2,950 of Medicare-covered costs in 2026, and $3,050 in 2027, before the plan pays (CMS announcements, October 2025 and October 2026). It can suit healthy people with savings who want the Medigap safety net at a lower monthly cost. Plan N has lower premiums than G in exchange for small copays, up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for an emergency room visit that does not lead to an admission.
A worked example, as an illustration only. Take a year with a hospital stay and many doctor visits, all Medicare approved. On Original Medicare plus Plan G, the approved costs you pay yourself stop at the Part B deductible, $283. Add twelve months of the 2026 Part B premium ($2,434.80) and your fixed Medicare costs for the year are $2,717.80, plus your Medigap premium and your Part D premium. For comparison, a Medicare Advantage plan in Adams County can ask you to pay up to its in-network maximum in that same year, between $3,300 and $9,850 for 2027 (CMS Landscape), usually with a lower or $0 plan premium. A steady premium against a capped but uncertain bill: that is the real decision.
Once you are in, a Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable as long as you pay the premium. Some Colorado policies are priced on your current age (attained age rated), so premiums rise as you get older, while others are community rated (Colorado DOI Medigap guide). I show you how a company has priced over time, not only this year.
How I compare Medigap plans with you. I confirm your Part B start date and your six month window first, because that decides whether you can buy without health questions. Then I price Plan G, Plan N and high deductible Plan G from the companies I work with for your ZIP code, age and tobacco status, note each company's rating method and any household discount, and price your prescriptions on the Part D plans so the total is real.
Questions to ask me before you buy: Which letter fits how I use care, G, N or high deductible G? How does this company price as I age? Is there a household discount? When does my guaranteed window close? Which Part D plan prices my drugs best at my pharmacy? If I want to switch later, what would I need to pass?
Your needs and situation are unique, and I am committed to spending the time to get to know you so you get coverage and support that fits your lifestyle.
Your guaranteed window: in Colorado you have six months after you enroll in Part B to buy any Medigap plan without health questions or a higher price for your health (Colorado DOI Medigap guide, 2025). A company may apply a pre-existing condition waiting period of up to six months unless you had creditable coverage without a break of more than 63 days.
Under 65 on Medicare because of a disability? Colorado requires Medigap companies to sell to you, though premiums are usually higher than at 65. When you turn 65 you get a new guaranteed issue window, a good moment to look again.
Colorado adds its own guaranteed issue right: if you had Medicaid (Health First Colorado) when you first became eligible for Medicare and later lose it, you can buy a Medigap policy for six months from the date that coverage ends.
Colorado has no birthday or anniversary rule that lets you switch Medigap plans each year without health questions. Outside a guaranteed issue right, a switch means passing underwriting, and you get a 30 day free look on the new policy, so never cancel the old one until you are accepted.
You want to keep Original Medicare, see any doctor who accepts Medicare, and trade a monthly premium for predictable bills. It suits people who travel, split time between states, see specialists at different hospital systems, or simply want fewer surprises.
Usually during the six months after your Part B starts. In that window a company cannot turn you down or charge you more for your health. Colorado has no birthday rule, so after the window, changing plans usually means answering health questions unless you have a guaranteed issue right.

Both cover most of your share of Original Medicare costs and leave you the yearly Part B deductible ($283 in 2026). Plan N adds copays of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for some emergency room visits, and does not pay Part B excess charges, usually for a lower premium.
I compare the two with your own doctor visits in mind.

Yes. Colorado requires Medigap companies to sell to Medicare beneficiaries under 65 who qualify because of a disability, though premiums are usually higher than at 65. When you turn 65 you get a new guaranteed issue window to shop again.
No. Medigap policies do not cover prescriptions. Most people with a Medigap plan also enroll in a stand-alone Part D plan, and enrolling on time avoids the Part D late enrollment penalty.
