The community

Northglenn at a glance

The Census Bureau counts about 38,000 Northglenn residents, 13.2% of them 65 or older, a higher share than nearby Thornton or Commerce City. Median household income is about $84,000. In the CDC PLACES estimates, Northglenn adults are above the Colorado county average on diabetes (9.5%) and high blood pressure (27.7%), two conditions that usually mean regular prescriptions.

Northglenn is in Adams County (the State Demography Office counts 25 residents in a Weld County sliver), so residents choose from the Adams County plan list. The plans with drug coverage and the lowest Part D deductibles are listed below, followed by the standalone Part D plans for anyone keeping Original Medicare. The nearest hospitals in the CMS file are in Thornton and Westminster.

How Lisa helps here. Northglenn is a short drive from the Brighton office. Lisa runs your actual prescription list against each plan, at the office, by phone or by video, because the deductible is only part of what you pay.

What does the Northglenn Senior Center offer, and can it help with costs?

The Northglenn Senior Center is inside the Northglenn Recreation Center at 1 East Memorial Parkway, at the south entrance, and it is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for people 55 and up (303-450-8801). Most activities need advance registration, even the free ones.

The city also runs a small assistance fund for residents 55 and older whose needs cannot be met through Adams County or other programs. It can help with things like home maintenance, accessibility problems, car repair and emergency funds, up to a $500 cap, and it does not pay off debt or regular monthly bills.

A one-time repair grant helps, but medical bills are where a fixed income usually gets hurt. That is the reason to look hard at the yearly out-of-pocket limit on a Medicare Advantage plan, or at a Medigap policy that leaves very little to pay after Original Medicare. Lisa walks through both with you, using your real prescriptions and doctors. The city's senior resource list also points to the Adams County Aging Network (303-760-8388), Adams County Human Services for emergency and financial help, and the LEAP energy assistance program.

How did Northglenn grow up next to Thornton, and does that change my Medicare plans?

Northglenn began as a planned subdivision. In the spring of 1959, Perl-Mack finalized plans for a 280-acre community in unincorporated Adams County, with schools, a golf course, churches, parks and a regional shopping center at its heart. More than 15,000 people toured the first five show homes, at what is now the northeast corner of Interstate 25 and 104th Avenue, on June 30, 1959, and by October 1962 the development had 10,000 residents and 3,000 homes. Life magazine and the National Association of Home Builders gave it national recognition in 1961.

Becoming a city took longer. Residents voted to incorporate on October 13, 1964, the City of Thornton opposed it in court, and the Colorado Supreme Court upheld the vote on January 31, 1969. Northglenn officially incorporated on April 19, 1969.

For Medicare, the old city line with Thornton does not matter. Both cities sit in Adams County, and plans are approved county by county, so a house on either side of the line chooses from the same Adams County list. What does differ from house to house is which doctors you use, and that is what decides the plan.

How can I get to medical appointments from Northglenn without a car?

The city's senior resource list names several options. A-Lift, the Adams County Community Transit service, takes urban Adams County residents 60 and over, and disabled residents of any age, to medical and dental appointments, adult day programs, grocery stores and personal trips within seven miles of home; call a few days ahead. DRCOG runs a transportation voucher program with free rides for people over 60 who qualify (720-278-2345 or 303-480-6700). RTD FlexRide covers a Thornton and Northglenn zone with curb-to-curb service, and Access-a-Ride serves people certified under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Rail is close too: RTD's N Line stops at Northglenn•112th, with trains to Union Station every 20 minutes at peak times.

Before you pick a plan, check where its in-network specialists actually are. The nearest hospitals in the CMS file are HCA HealthOne Mountain Ridge in Thornton and St. Anthony North Hospital in Westminster; a plan built around Denver or Aurora hospitals means longer trips. Some Medicare Advantage plans list a transportation benefit; if you rely on rides, Lisa looks for it in the plan's Evidence of Coverage. She meets Northglenn clients at the Brighton office or by phone or video.

Crude rates follow the age mix of a place: an older community reads higher on most conditions. Colorado figure: average of the 64 Colorado counties, weighted by adult population.

Why this matters for plan choice

Northglenn runs above the Colorado county average on diagnosed diabetes and high blood pressure. The chronic-condition Special Needs Plans on the Adams County list are built around: Cardiovascular Disorders; Chronic Heart Failure; Diabetes Mellitus. If you live with one of those, a C-SNP may be worth a look; you need a qualifying diagnosis to join.

Members are not moved into the new plan automatically; to keep it, enroll in the new plan ID by December 7, 2026. The full list is on the Adams County guide.

Provenance

Sources and methodology

How the figures are derived

  • Headline plan counts and averages exclude Special Needs Plans, which have their own eligibility rules and are reported separately.
  • "$0 Part C premium" counts plans whose Part C premium is $0. "$0 combined monthly premium for Parts C and D" counts plans whose consolidated Part C + D premium is $0 (for a plan without drug coverage, its Part C premium); our guides and blog use this second count. Out-of-pocket limits are in-network amounts. The average Part D deductible covers plans with drug coverage only.
  • The 2026 to 2027 comparison counts Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included, and its "$0" row uses the combined Part C + D premium, so it differs from the headline count.
  • When the CMS crosswalk ends a plan with no successor but the same company files a plan with the same or a similar name under a new plan ID, we say so; members are not moved into the new ID automatically.
  • We do not publish per-plan enrollment: the source does not carry it, and we never estimate plan figures.
