How old is Platteville, and how did it start?

The story begins about a mile south of town at Fort Vasquez, a fur trading post built in 1835 by Louis Vasquez and Andrew Sublette. The fur trade ended within a decade, and in the late 1930s WPA crews, citizens and the State Historical Society restored the fort. The site is now home to the town's Welcome Center at Fort Vasquez.

The town came with the Denver Pacific Railroad. The Platte River Land Company filed the town plat on July 17, 1871, and auctioned lots in Chicago and New York City. Weld County's history describes Platteville as a temperance colony, much like Greeley's Union Colony, that stayed dry until the election of 1889. The Mizpah Club built the first Platteville Library in 1932; today the Platteville Public Library is at 504 Marion Avenue, part of the High Plains Library District. The town counts over 200 farms in the surrounding area.

What does the Platteville senior center offer?

Platteville Seniors runs a full calendar. The town lists cards, games, puzzles, pool, sewing, crafting and knitting, monthly craft classes on Tuesdays, visits from the Platteville Library, and summer Tuesday evening meals. Practical services include:

  • Friendly Fork lunch on Mondays and Fridays at 11:30 a.m. through the Weld County Area Agency on Aging, at 508 Reynolds. Reserve by Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at (720) 815-8136; the suggested donation is $5.00 for seniors 60 and older.
  • Blood pressure checks on the third Monday before senior lunch, with the Platteville Gilcrest Fire Protection District.
  • Foot care services every other month on the third Friday, by appointment.
  • Weekday rides to appointments with Via Mobility, booked at (303) 444-3043; the town lists service hours of 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Greeley has the closest hospitals in the CMS file, so ask Via about trips there.

The senior center travels a lot. Does my Medicare plan come with me?

Platteville Seniors lists about 50 day trips a year, plus two overnight trips of two or three nights. That is a good reason to understand how your coverage works away from home, especially if your current plan is ending and you are choosing a new one.

On a day trip away from home, an HMO still covers you if you need the ER or urgent care, Medicare.gov explains, but a routine visit to an out-of-network doctor there generally is not covered. PPOs pay for out-of-network care at a higher cost share. Original Medicare goes wherever a provider accepts Medicare, and a Medigap policy helps with your share.

Trips outside the country are different. Original Medicare covers care outside the U.S. only in rare cases. Medicare Advantage plans follow the same Medicare rules, though a plan may add coverage abroad, so ask the plan before you go. Most Medigap plans include foreign travel emergency care: 80% of billed charges after a $250 yearly deductible, for care that begins in the first 60 days of a trip, up to a $50,000 lifetime limit.

My plan is ending. How do I keep my Greeley doctors?

Start with the list of who you actually see: your primary care doctor, any specialist, and the Greeley hospital you would use. Then check each replacement plan against that list before you look at premiums. If you rely on Via for rides, a doctor you can reach on a weekday schedule matters too.

Lisa works with Platteville clients by phone or video. She checks your doctors and prescriptions against the Weld County plans that remain for 2027, so the plan you pick before December 7 still covers the care you use. Counting plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included, the Weld County list goes from 53 plans in 2026 to 42 in 2027, and the average in-network out-of-pocket limit moves from $6,757 to $7,710.

Health profile

What is common in Platteville

Plan choice follows the conditions you actually live with, because they decide which specialists and drugs you need covered.

Compared with the Colorado county average, Platteville reads higher on diagnosed diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, copd and adults 18 to 64 without health insurance.

Model-based small-area estimates of crude prevalence among adults 18 and over, not a count of local diagnoses. Crude rates follow the age mix of a place: an older community reads higher on most conditions. Colorado figure: average of the 64 Colorado counties, weighted by adult population.

Why this matters for plan choice

Of the conditions above where Platteville reads higher than the Colorado county average, diagnosed diabetes and high blood pressure are among those a chronic-condition Special Needs Plan can cover. The chronic-condition Special Needs Plans on the Weld County list are built around: Cardiovascular Disorders; Chronic Heart Failure; Diabetes Mellitus. If you live with one of those, a C-SNP may be worth a look; you need a qualifying diagnosis to join.

Provenance

Sources and methodology

How the figures are derived

  • Headline plan counts and averages exclude Special Needs Plans, which have their own eligibility rules and are reported separately.
  • "$0 Part C premium" counts plans whose Part C premium is $0. "$0 combined monthly premium for Parts C and D" counts plans whose consolidated Part C + D premium is $0 (for a plan without drug coverage, its Part C premium); our guides and blog use this second count. Out-of-pocket limits are in-network amounts. The average Part D deductible covers plans with drug coverage only.
  • The 2026 to 2027 comparison counts Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included, and its "$0" row uses the combined Part C + D premium, so it differs from the headline count.
  • When the CMS crosswalk ends a plan with no successor but the same company files a plan with the same or a similar name under a new plan ID, we say so; members are not moved into the new ID automatically.
  • We do not publish per-plan enrollment: the source does not carry it, and we never estimate plan figures.
