Medicare Advantage vs Medicare Supplement in Colorado

The biggest Medicare decision, side by side: how Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans differ on doctors, costs, drugs and travel, why switching later is harder in Colorado, and how to decide.

A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) works alongside Original Medicare: you can see any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare, pay a higher monthly premium, and have low, predictable costs when you get care. You add a separate Part D plan for drugs. A Medicare Advantage plan replaces Original Medicare with a private plan that usually includes drug coverage and often extras like dental, has lower or $0 plan premiums, and uses networks, copays and a yearly out-of-pocket maximum. In Colorado, a Medigap policy bought outside your first six-month window can require health questions, so the order you choose in matters.

When a Medicare Supplement tends to fit

  • You want to keep a specific specialist or hospital system and not worry about networks.
  • You travel, or split the year between Colorado and another state.
  • You have a health condition and want costs you can predict to the dollar.
  • You would rather pay more each month than face large bills in a hard year.

When Medicare Advantage tends to fit

  • Your doctors are in a local plan network and you are comfortable staying in it.
  • You want a lower monthly premium and drug coverage in one card.
  • Dental, vision, hearing or fitness benefits matter to you.
  • You are generally healthy and comfortable with copays up to a yearly maximum.

What the 2027 market looks like near Brighton

According to the CY2027 CMS Landscape file, Adams County has 36 Medicare Advantage plans from 10 organizations, not counting Special Needs Plans. 33 of them have a $0 Part C premium and 30 have no monthly premium for Parts C and D combined, and in-network out-of-pocket maximums range from $3,300 to $9,850. Weld County has 25 plans from 8 organizations, with maximums from $4,300 to $9,850.

For Medigap, the Colorado Division of Insurance publishes premium charts by company each year. Its guide notes that the same plan letter can vary widely in price; its own example is a Plan G at $150 a month from one company and $250 from another. Pairing a supplement with one of Colorado's 8 standalone Part D plans for 2027 completes that path.

Why the order matters in Colorado

Colorado has no Medigap birthday rule (NAIC chart, as of May 11, 2026). Outside your six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period and a few guaranteed issue situations, a company can ask health questions and turn you down. Moving from a supplement to Medicare Advantage is easy each fall. Moving from Medicare Advantage back to a supplement may not be.

There are protections. If you join a Medicare Advantage plan when you are first eligible at 65 and leave within 12 months, the federal trial right lets you buy a Medigap policy without health questions. If you dropped a Medigap policy to try Medicare Advantage for the first time and leave within 12 months, you can often get your old policy back. Colorado also guarantees issue if you had Medicaid when you first got Medicare and later lose it.

A worked comparison using 2026 federal figures

Here is an illustration, not a quote. Say you need a knee replacement. On Original Medicare with Plan G, you pay the $283 Part B deductible for the year and nothing else for Medicare-covered care: Plan G pays the $1,736 Part A deductible and your 20 percent Part B coinsurance. You have paid twelve months of premiums whether or not you needed care.

On a Medicare Advantage plan, you pay the plan's hospital copays (often a daily amount for the first several days), surgeon and therapy copays, and you may need prior authorization. Your total for medical care stops at the plan's out-of-pocket maximum, which near Brighton ranges from $3,300 to $9,850 in 2027. In a year with no major care, you may pay very little beyond your Part B premium.

How I help people decide

I take a commonsense approach. I ask about your doctors, prescriptions, travel and budget, listen to what matters most to you, and only then recommend the type of coverage that fits. I will show you both paths with real numbers, and if a supplement is the right long-term choice I will tell you to lock it in during your window, even if the monthly premium is higher.

The bottom line

Choose a Medicare Supplement if you value freedom to see any doctor and predictable costs, and can budget a higher monthly premium. Choose Medicare Advantage if your doctors are in network and you prefer a lower premium with extras. In Colorado, make the supplement decision during your first six-month window, because switching back later can involve health questions. Call our Brighton office if you would like both options priced for your doctors and drugs.

Common questions

What is the main difference between Medicare Advantage and a Medicare Supplement?

A Medicare Supplement works with Original Medicare so you can see any provider that accepts Medicare, with a higher premium and predictable costs. Medicare Advantage replaces Original Medicare with a private plan that uses networks and copays, often with a lower premium and drug coverage included.

Can I switch from Medicare Advantage to a Medicare Supplement in Colorado?

You can switch to Original Medicare each fall, but outside guaranteed issue situations a Medigap company in Colorado can ask health questions and may decline you, because Colorado has no birthday rule.

How many Medicare Advantage plans are available in Adams County for 2027?

According to the CY2027 CMS Landscape file, Adams County has 36 Medicare Advantage plans from 10 organizations, not counting Special Needs Plans, and 33 of them have a $0 Part C premium and 30 have no monthly premium for Parts C and D combined.

Do I still pay the Part B premium with Medicare Advantage?

Yes. You keep paying your Part B premium, $202.90 a month in 2026, plus any plan premium.
