The community

Hudson at a glance

The Census Bureau counts about 2,000 Hudson residents, with a median household income of about $81,300. In a town this size the survey estimates carry wide margins, so read them as a rough guide. CDC PLACES estimates show Hudson adults above the Colorado county average on diabetes (10.0%) and high blood pressure (28.5%).

Hudson residents choose from the Weld County plan list for 2027. A few plans on that list have no drug coverage; they are usually chosen by people with creditable drug coverage elsewhere, such as through the VA, and they are listed below. The nearest hospitals in the CMS file are in Brighton and Greeley.

How Lisa helps here. Hudson clients meet Lisa at the Brighton office, by phone or by video. She explains the trade-offs in plain English and checks that any plan without drug coverage will not leave you facing a Part D late enrollment penalty.

How did irrigation turn Hudson into a farm town?

Hudson started as a Union Pacific water and supply stop, with a post office, in 1883. John M. Lapp filed the first plat in 1887 for the Hudson City Land and Improvement Company, which gave the town its name. The real change came with water: the Henrylyn Municipal Irrigation District was created in 1907, about 75 farm families from Kansas and Oklahoma arrived between 1910 and 1913, and Hudson incorporated in 1914. By 1930 the Henrylyn system irrigated 34,617 acres of southeast Weld County with South Platte River water.

Weld County's history describes Hudson's economy as farming and agriculture, and farming often means being your own boss. That matters at two points: before 65, when your health plan comes from Connect for Health Colorado rather than an employer, and at 65, when the rules for signing up for Medicare are stricter than many people expect.

I farm near Hudson and buy my own health plan. When does Medicare start for me?

Usually at 65. Medicare.gov is direct about this: if you are self-employed, or your health insurance is not a group plan available to everyone at a company you currently work for, sign up for Medicare when you turn 65 to avoid a monthly late enrollment penalty. An individual plan bought through Connect for Health Colorado does not let you delay Part B the way a large employer plan can.

Your first chance to sign up starts 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ends 3 months after it. Wait past that, and you may go months without coverage and pay a Part B penalty for as long as you have Part B. If you are covered through a spouse who still works, the answer can be different, so check the employer plan before you decide. Lisa walks Hudson clients through the dates in person in Brighton, or over the phone or a video call, and makes sure the switch from a marketplace plan to Medicare does not leave a gap.

I am a veteran in Hudson. Do I need Medicare if I have VA care?

The VA encourages veterans to sign up for Medicare when they can. Its own guidance gives the reason: Medicare covers you when you go to a non-VA hospital or doctor, which gives you more options. The VA does not bill Medicare, so the two work side by side rather than together. If you have Part B and cancel it, the VA warns that you cannot get it back until January of the following year and may owe a penalty.

For Hudson veterans, the VA medical center is in Aurora: Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center, 1700 North Wheeling Street. For non-VA care, Intermountain Health Platte Valley Hospital in Brighton is the closest hospital in the CMS file, with two more in Greeley. A Medicare plan without drug coverage, paired with VA prescriptions, is one option this page lists; the medical network still has to include the non-VA doctors and hospital you would actually use.

Where do Hudson seniors find meals, books and a ride?

Hudson does not have its own Friendly Fork lunch site on the Weld County list, but two neighbors do, both for people 60 and older with a reservation:

  • Lochbuie: Afterglows Senior Center, 501 Willow Drive, Tuesdays at 12:15 p.m., (303) 659-8262.
  • Fort Lupton: the Recreation Center, 203 S. Harrison Avenue, Mondays at noon; reserve by the Thursday before at (303) 857-4200.
  • Hudson Public Library, part of the High Plains Library District, at 100 S. Beech Street, (303) 536-4550.
  • 60+ Ride, listed by the Weld County Area Agency on Aging: free door-to-door rides for Weld County adults 60 and older, usually booked in advance, at (970) 352-9348.

What is common in Hudson

Plan choice follows the conditions you actually live with, because they decide which specialists and drugs you need covered.

Compared with the Colorado county average, Hudson reads higher on diagnosed diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, coronary heart disease, copd and adults under 65 without insurance.

CDC PLACES: Local Data for Better Health, Place Data, 2025 release (2023 survey estimates), retrieved 2026-10-14. Model-based small-area estimates of crude prevalence among adults 18 and over, not a count of local diagnoses. Crude rates follow the age mix of a place: an older community reads higher on most conditions. Colorado figure: average of the 64 Colorado counties, weighted by adult population.

Why this matters for plan choice

Hudson runs above the Colorado county average on high blood pressure, diagnosed diabetes, high cholesterol, stroke and coronary heart disease. The chronic-condition Special Needs Plans on the Weld County list are built around: Cardiovascular Disorders; Chronic Heart Failure; Diabetes Mellitus. If you live with one of those, a C-SNP may be worth a look; you need a qualifying diagnosis to join.

13 plans on the 2026 Weld County list end with no similar plan in the county, including Select Health Medicare + Kroger (HMO), Select Health Medicare Flex (HMO), Select Health Medicare Active (HMO). 4 more plans end while the same company offers a plan with the same or a similar name under a new plan ID (HealthSpring TotalCare (HMO D-SNP), HealthSpring TotalCare Plus (HMO D-SNP), HealthSpring Preferred (HMO) and Select Health Medicare Essential (HMO)). Members are not moved into the new plan automatically; to keep it, enroll in the new plan ID by December 7, 2026. The full list is on the Weld County guide.

If your plan is not renewing: you receive a non-renewal letter in October. You can pick a new plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 to December 7, 2026), and a Special Enrollment Period runs through the end of February 2027. Sources and methodology

How the figures are derived

  • Headline plan counts and averages exclude Special Needs Plans, which have their own eligibility rules and are reported separately.
  • "$0 Part C premium" counts plans whose Part C premium is $0. "$0 combined monthly premium for Parts C and D" counts plans whose consolidated Part C + D premium is $0 (for a plan without drug coverage, its Part C premium); our guides and blog use this second count. Out-of-pocket limits are in-network amounts. The average Part D deductible covers plans with drug coverage only.
  • The 2026 to 2027 comparison counts Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included, and its "$0" row uses the combined Part C + D premium, so it differs from the headline count.
  • When the CMS crosswalk ends a plan with no successor but the same company files a plan with the same or a similar name under a new plan ID, we say so; members are not moved into the new ID automatically.
  • We do not publish per-plan enrollment: the source does not carry it, and we never estimate plan figures.
